The Food and Drug Administration is alerting dog owners over eight dry dog food brands recalled for potentially deadly levels of vitamin D. Find out if your dog food is on the FDA recall list.
FDA scientists found that samples of the recalled brands contained as much as 70 times the intended amount of vitamin D, an essential nutrient that, when too much is ingested, can lead to vomiting, loss of appetite, increased thirst and urination, as well as kidney failure, weight loss and death in dogs.
The brands affected by the recall as of Monday included Nutrisca, Natural Life Pet Products, Sunshine Mills, ANF, Lidl, Kroger, ELM Pet Products and Ahold Delhaize. All of them were sold nationwide, according to FDA officials.
“At this time, the only pet products that have been impacted are food made for dogs,” the FDA said in a notice on its website. “Pet owners should discontinue feeding these recalled products.”
Anyone whose dog is showing symptoms of vitamin D toxicity and has consumed the recalled brands should contact their veterinarian immediately. Pet owners can also report suspected cases to the FDA’s Consumer Complaint Coordinators or via the agency’s Safety Reporting Portal.
“Don’t feed the recalled products to your pets or any other animal,” the FDA’s notice continued. “Contact the company listed on the package for further instructions or throw the products away in a way that children, pets and wildlife cannot access them.”
